What is distortion? Many individuals typically know what distortion actually sounds like, but they seem to be oblivious to the meaning of distortion. To a none musician, distortion is just an unwanted sound, however to a musician (a guitarist specifically) distortion is an audio effect. Distortion means changing any specific thing from its original or normal state. More specifically when referring to audio,

distortion is change in the waveform of an audio signal.
